1974 Argosy Airstream 26' Travel Trailer
"The story goes that in the early 1970s Airstream wanted to offer a medium priced trailer. Airstream's then president Chuck Manchester saw the solution in a separate line of trailers sharing some of Airstream's time tested features, while adding new twists and painted exteriors. They shared the aerodynamic aluminum structural design and featured an identical axle. "Argosy, above all means value," the brochures proclaimed. "Built by the pioneers of the trailering industry.". Today, Argosy trailers are quite rare and are recognized as yet another fascinating element in Airstream's storied history. Argosy owners are a passionate breed, and today their trailers are welcome at Airstream events across the country." Thx to airstream.com
For consignment, a 1974 Argosy Airstream 26' Travel Trailer with many new parts, important components, and working amenities.
Exterior
The beige over brick red paint is decidedly retro, but so is the shape of the trailer. The Airstream cousin boasts wraparound front windows akin to bay windows in a house and a door that is flush with the curvature of the tubular design. Individual windows also curve slightly with the shape and marker lights are abundant with requisite rows up high and other lights down low. Dual propane tanks are mounted on the trailer tongue and the air conditioner rides high on the roof. Our consignor states the tires are new and mounted on 15-inch wheels with dog dish hubcaps. Imperfections include a number of relatively minor dents and dings, and one area where filler was applied and painted.
Interior
This is Classic Auto Mall Cribs edition as we describe living quarters instead of dashboards. We step onto the new floor and are immediately sent to 1974 in a good way! The retro brown couch toward the front of the trailer and its wood grain cabinets are period correct and the window curtains, although new, are not far behind! The rounded ceiling gives height to the trailer and the rounded fuselage creates an open and airy feeling. The propane four burner stove works, as does the new propane heater and the apartment sized refrigerator is also new and provides more than adequate interior space. A small kitchen sink has covers to provide additional counter space and is surrounded with wood. Rounded half walls are reminiscent of an airplane and the wide hallway leads to a convertible couch, woodgrain closets and table surfaces, and a dry bath in the back with separate shower, toilet, and sink along with additional storage closets. It all appears to be in good condition with none of the peeling, tears, staining, or other unpleasantries sometimes found in old campers. This one is tidy, indeed.
Undercarriage
Drum brakes are equipped on the twin axles as is rubber torsion bar suspension.
Retro trailers and anything associated with Airstream in particular, are hot in the market right now. We're thrilled to represent this rare Argosy in very good condition and presenting with new PEX water lines, a working air conditioner, and all aluminum construction. Get ready for campground neighbors to ask you why you painted your Airstream as they greet you with a "tsk tsk" and it will be up to you to educate the masses about this cool piece of camping history!
