2012 Chevrolet Camaro 2SS Convertible
GM did the unthinkable at the end of the 2002 model year, they killed off the Camaro from their line up. The bowtie faithful had 8 long years to wait for the return of the Mustang slayer and in this writer's humble opinion, the wait was worth it. Retro style, hopped up horsepower and a slew of options made the new Camaro one for the record books with 129,405 produced for the 2010 model year return. The Camaro was back and in a big way, offered for consignment, a 2012 2SS version of the 5th generation Camaro in drop top guise. A 2 time Bronze award winner at the Camaro Nationals and having only logged 43,829 actual miles and dressed up with some snappy factory installed options along with a few mild personal customized touches, we have a winner here waiting for you in our Hallowed Halls.
Note: VIN Data shows an open recall for this car. NHTSA Recall ID 14V346000
Exterior
The Camaro took on a very menacing look for 2012 with its V shaped front, deep set headlights, long rear scooped and vented hood, raked windshield and of course the low convertible top. Our example is bathed in Silver Ice Metallic and has painted orange side racing stripes running down the upper beltline of this car. Save for some tail light bezels and the chrome tipped exhaust the car is devoid of chrome trimmings. We note a few dings on the bottom of the driver's door along with scuffs, some heavy, some light on the lower front fascia. Snappy eggcrate grilles have been inserted in both the upper and lower front fascia and harken back to the 1969 design. True to form, the RS package is on this ride and consists of HID headlights with an integrated halo ring, a Nascar inspired rear spoiler, RS specific taillights and the 20" Midnight Silver painted aluminum wheels. A black canvas convertible top is on, along with a rear glass window. Many styling cues harken back to the most loved 1969 Camaro, fog lamps in the lower valance where signal makers once resided, and the rear quarter panel gill dress up which were also an option on the '69 model although not dressed on our example. The design engineers hit the mark spot on!
Interior
Lowering the top with a flip of a switch, and we see Inferno Orange leather seats which are within a black bordering tub. These are high backed buckets and feature some custom embossing on the headrests, all within a stitched rounded over rectangle panel. A sea of black carpeting covers the floors and gives some foot comfort to the rear passengers too. A curved dash which is mostly black has a white highlighting strip going through the center with the continuation of the orange stripes through the middle taken from the exterior's inspiration. A very clean center console races through the seats and has a series of 4 display gauges in front right next to where it will rise to the dash center. In this section we note an AM/FM/CD stereo system from the factory that is also XM Satellite capable. The driver has a rally wheel to hold on to and in front is a futuristic styled dash with dual rectangle gauges and a central display between them. Orange stitching is throughout the cabin and emulates the 1969 Camaro pace car which was very popular for its time. Call it retro! A few features of note are a heads up display, StabilTrack ESP system, Performance launch control, which was designated in the 2SS equipment package.
Drivetrain
Under the hood is an all buttoned up silver and black clad 6.2 liter V8. This mill specs out at 426hp. It is fed with EFI and has a TR6060 6-speed manual transmission. The rear axle weighs in at 3.45 and has limited slip.
Undercarriage
All clean and black underneath with only a hint of road dirt. All solid steel construction along with cast aluminum parts for the suspension to save some weight. Front suspension is MacPherson struts, and the rear is an independent multilink system. Power disc brakes are on all 4 corners and are Brembo 4 piston caliper brakes. Original exhaust with showroom condition pipes and mufflers are on and seen underneath.
Drive-Ability
A fast car able to keep pace with pretty much anything you can throw at it. It runs very smoothly, has great acceleration, and fine handling. All functions are working swimmingly save for a P0499 code to the displayed check engine light and even though I was tempted to take another lap, I restrained myself for the sake of preserving the low miles. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
A very nicely optioned 2012 Camaro SS convertible with nice paint, nice orange racing stripes, and a black drop top. An orange highlighted gray and black interior and very low miles are just a few of the highlights you'll be grabbed by in our East hallway where this car resides, but...probably not for long!
