1987 Chevrolet Camaro IROC-Z Convertible
For consignment, a 1987 Chevrolet Camaro IROC-Z convertible, one of just 744 produced in '87 and a 20th anniversary model. In fact, it's the only anniversary edition that GM released without an official announcement and that accounts for the low production and short sales. The only designation is found on the map pocket on the dash in front of the passenger seat.
Exterior
Bright Red paint contrasts with the black accents on the car, including the headlight coves, the non functional hood vents, the air intake opening above the chin, the stripe that encircles the car, the canvas soft top, and the ever cool black grid of the taillights. A Z28 emblem is on the rocker panel and IROC-Z is applied as a decal on the door bottom and denotes motion even when standing still. The paint is in good condition save for some large touched up chips, several dings, rust around a door key cylinder, a rear corner hit on the polyurethane bumper, and chips and scrapes on the chin. The black canvas top is showing some age with missing or loose threads, wear around the window, a small linear tear, and the plastic window shows some cloudiness. The 16-inch 5 spoke Z28 wheels and their argent gray cutouts are in great shape and the low profile of the car is enhanced with the top down and a steeply raked windshield.
Interior
A row of thick embossed lines augments the black vinyl and plastic door cards, generally unremarkable and clean. More thick lines cross diagonally on the seat backs and bottom in embossed gray cloth. There's a touch of wear on the piping of the seats and waviness, but otherwise in good condition as are the back 2+2 seats. Our steering wheel wears an aftermarket cover and leads to the black plastic gauge cluster where the usual pertinent information is displayed including an 85mph speedometer. The hard plastic squares continue to the center console where simple climate controls top a more modern Sony AM/FM/CD radio with touchscreen. Where a glove box would be, we find the map pocket and the coveted designation of 20th Anniversary. The center console houses the shifter and leads back to a vinyl padded armrest, all in decent shape. Low pile black carpet covers the floor and shows some wear, most notably around the dead pedal. The trunk is deep and clean and contains a space saver spare tire.
Drivetrain
This Z is equipped with the 305ci V8 and is clean driver quality under the hood. It is fed by a 4-barrel carburetor all rated at 170 horsepower and tied to a 700R4 4-speed automatic transmission. Power is sent to the rear 10 bolt and 2.73 gears while power brakes, front disc, rear drums, bring the car to a halt. Our consignor states a new heater core has been added, thus saving you the headache.
Undercarriage
Driver quality underneath with its fair share of surface rust. The single exhaust enters a large muffler in the rear, then exits via two short tailpipes. We note some invasive rust on the rear crash bar, and a bit less severe rust on the door bottoms which appears to have been encapsulated externally. Drips of oil on the pan while residual oil is seen on the crossmember under the transmission and on the rear diff. The consignor informs us that the tie rods were recently replaced. Coil spring suspension lives up front with a torque arm and coil springs in the back.
Drive-Ability
Prime the carb and turn the key and off we go in this third gen Camaro. IROC was named for the International Race of Champions and looks the part and it's got adequate power, great handling, and with the top down, endless visibility and off the charts coolness. All functions work as they should and the seating position in F-bodies is supportive and relaxed, like a good therapy session.
Here's a driver that would also fit right in at car shows and cruise nights. Many cars that have passed through the ASC facility are unique and some are legendary. This one is certainly uncommon yet does not present as a garage queen you'd probably hesitate to drive. And my son tells me this would make a fantastic graduation gift! Clever kid.
